Holiday Properties in Lydney
Not many small towns can boast a harbour, a canal, a castle and a railway, but Lydney can, and that's why it draws so many visitors each year. If you're staying at one of our large group holiday houses nearby, you should come here for a stroll around and a bite to eat.
The historic harbour was built in the 19th century for ships transporting coal, timber, tinplate and stone from the Forest of Dean; the canal must surely be the shortest in the world at only a mile long, but it's a nice place to go for a walk or just to spend time sitting on the banks. Have a look round St Braviels Castle; it dates back to 1209, but actually, there's been a settlement at Lydney since Roman times, with Lydney Park Spring Gardens having a temple, bath house and guest house; nowadays it's nice to spend time in the tranquil gardens there, seeing the ruins. The Dean Forest Railway will take you on a gentle 4.5 mile trip through gorgeous countryside and shady woodlands on a good old fashioned steam train; treat yourselves to cream tea on board, it's all good fun.
But that's not all there is to Lydney; at times it's quite a lively little place with its range of shops, sports facilites and a leisure centre, and several places to eat - pubs, cafes and restaurants. Check out our large group holiday accommodation near Lydney to find the perfect base for your stay in Gloucestershire; with private pools and games rooms you won't need to worry about the weather.
